What is RYOnline?

RYOnline is a free online peer support community for rainbow young people aged between 13 and 27 years old who live in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This service is maintained and operated by RainbowYOUTH

By registering on RYOnline, you agree to our code of conduct and account privacy outlined below.

Safety Monitoring

Our online community is closely monitored by RainbowYOUTH staff and volunteers, to ensure all users are following our community code of conduct.

Online Hours

As part of our safety protocols, our online community is only live from 7am to 7pm each day. It cannot be accessed outside of these hours.

RYOnline is for rainbow young people between the ages of 13 and 27 living in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We want to ensure everyone who comes to RY Online feels welcome and respected. As such, we ask that you do not make posts that:

  • are obscene or offensive;
  • are malicious, personally attack another person, or are hostile;
  • directly talk about or allude to another member;
  • are considered NSFW (keep it PG13);
  • may be seen as discriminatory or inciting violence.

To ensure that RY Online remains a safe and warm place for all members, we ask that you do not publish content that contains graphic or specific details of:

  • self-harm and/or suicide methods;
  • sexual or physical abuse;
  • eating disorder behaviours;
  • medication or dosages;
  • any other content that others may find distressing or be harmful.

In an effort to create a safe online environment, we also restrict content of the following nature:

  • posts which may be seen to be serving yours or somebody else’s commercial interests;
  • could be interpreted as professional advice, such as legal advice;
  • posts pressuring members to interact on other online platforms;
  • requests for research participation.

RY Online is not a crisis or counselling service. Anyone who is at risk of harm or experiencing any potential crisis will be directed to the relevant crisis and emergency services. If you are currently in crisis, please call 111 and your local crisis team.

We encourage members to report posts which breach community guidelines or are triggering or concerning to support staff or volunteers for moderation. We reserve the right to view user access logs.

To ensure the safety of our members, we have to report incidents where we believe a young person is at risk of harm. When this occurs, our staff may use the information you have provided on registration to contact emergency services and/or other relevant authorities on your behalf.

We will need to make a report if you are at immediate risk of harm right now or you are putting others at risk of harm. When we say harm, we mean danger to yourself and/or others, imminent suicidal thoughts or actions, physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse or psychological abuse.

In the case that staff receive evidence that RYOnline is being used for harmful or inappropriate behaviours (e.g., attempts to solicit information, photographs, or contact details from another user) we reserve the right to access user logs, including private messaging logs. This data will only be accessed by RainbowYOUTH support staff, and only in the case where evidence to suggest breaches of the code of conduct have been made.

RYOnline is primarily monitored and moderated by a team of volunteers, who generously offer their time and energy to provide peer support and sustain our service. We have zero tolerance for behaviour which is disrespectful towards our team, or intentionally disregards warnings or moderation decisions.

Our team typically operates between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. We may not be able to respond to moderation or support requests outside of these hours.

RYOnline staff and volunteers may edit or remove any posts that do not meet our guidelines without notice. However, members will usually receive an infraction and/or warning with an explanation if you have breached our guidelines.

Staff and volunteers reserve the right to temporarily suspend or permanently ban accounts of members who consistently breach the community guidelines. Some guideline breaches will result in an automatic ban, such as spamming, trolling, inciting hatred, or using the community for purposes which do not align with the RYOnline code of conduct.

Staff and volunteers may recommend that you seek professional, medical or crisis support, and close or restrict your comments/topics. RYOnline is a peer support community and not a crisis or professional counselling service, and at times we may refer you to appropriate services for further support. We trust that you will take steps to obtain additional support outside of the RYOnline community.

RYOnline community chat is only accessible between 7 am and 7 pm everyday. Attempts to access the service outside of these hours will result in a 404 error.

We have limited chat ours to ensure that we can adequately monitor and manage all conversations taking place on our platform.
